20,000 Rubber Ducks Take Over the River
LuxembourgPosted 9 hours ago by Team · 2 min readThousands of people gathered in Luxembourg’s Grund district on April 18, 2026, for the 25th edition of the famous Duck Race, a unique charity event where rubber ducks take over the Alzette River. Organized by the Round Table Luxembourg under the patronage of the city, the event has become one of the country’s most popular annual traditions, combining entertainment with a strong social purpose.
The event began around midday at the Neimënster area, where a lively village was set up with food stalls, music, and activities for families and children. Visitors enjoyed local dishes, drinks, and entertainment while waiting for the main highlight of the day—the race itself. The atmosphere was designed to be family-friendly, turning the event into a full-day celebration rather than just a competition.
At around 3 PM, thousands of numbered rubber ducks were released into the river. Each duck represented a €5 ticket purchased by participants, who “sponsor” a duck and hope it reaches the finish line first. The winners receive various prizes, often including major rewards such as a car, making the race both exciting and competitive despite its playful concept.
Beyond the fun, the core purpose of the event is charity. All proceeds from ticket sales are donated to several organisations that support children and people in need. These groups are also present at the event, giving visitors a chance to learn more about their work and the impact of the funds raised.
Over the years, the Duck Race has grown into a meaningful community tradition in Luxembourg. By combining a simple idea with a strong charitable mission, it brings people together while raising significant funds and awareness for important causes—proving that even a playful race can make a real difference.
